Although the segregated ballast system adopted at the 1973 Convention of the International Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO) is effective in preventing seawater pollution by oil, it is applicable only to tankers built after 1972. Far more practical for a large number of existing tankers is the use of load-on-top (LOP) system with some improvements. This paper describes the development of such an improved LOT system, as well as an improved slop tank which facilitates oil and sludge disposal outboard.
